NYAPRS Note: Mayor Adams’ policy to remove, detain, and transport to psychiatric hospitals those living with mental health concerns – which is being challenged in court – inappropriately authorizes police officers to determine if individuals are mentally ill and “unable to take care of their basic human needs,” and inappropriately authorizes police to bring these individuals to psychiatric hospitals over their objection.
Moreover, there is an insufficient number of hospital beds and staff members available to take in an influx of individuals, and, without a substantial investment in community services, the question remains where these individuals will go after hospitalization.
Come help bring our message to Governor Hochul this Tuesday December 20 and urge her to invest in voluntary community care services, such as peer-led crisis response options, supportive housing, and recovery programs, rather than coercive mental health arrests and bringing individuals to psychiatric hospitals who do not present a danger to themselves or others.
We will also call on the Governor to withhold support for the Mayor’s Legislative Agenda which would lessen standards for both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric commitment.
