Contact: Amy Colesante 518-813-3156 www.mhep.org
People who have been given a psychiatric diagnosis will come to Albany from all over New York State to stand in protest at Wednesday’s Joint Legislative Mental Hygiene budget hearing to protest legislative and budget proposals that defame our community and violate our human rights.
WHAT: Silent Demonstration, News Conference and Advocacy Action
WHERE: Hearing Room B NYS Legislative Office Building 9:30 am
News Conference outside at hearing’s end 12:30 pm
DATE: February 27, 2013
On Wednesday, February 27, 2013, busloads of people who have been given a psychiatric diagnosis will be demonstrating their objection to New York State legislation that criminalizes them and takes away their civil, human, and constitutional rights.
They will be wearing T-shirts that say “You are talking about me” and “Stop psychiatric profiling” in protest of legislation such as
- the New York Safe Act
- public health law Section 384b of the Social Services Law that removes children from their parents simply because they have been given a psychiatric diagnosis and
- the expansion and extension of the highly controversial Kendra’s Law.
They stand to demonstrate that “we are not dangerous and should not be the target of legislation that allows society to believe that we are.”
