Congress Must Protect Affordable Health Coverage as Shutdown Deal Advances!
As the Senate moves toward a vote on a bipartisan agreement to end the 40-day government shutdown, the Alliance for Rights and Recovery urges lawmakers to ensure that enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits are extended before they expire.
Under the current proposal, the shutdown would end, and several essential programs, including SNAP food assistance, Veterans Affairs, and agricultural services, would receive full-year funding. The bill would also reverse federal worker layoffs and guarantee back pay for those furloughed during the shutdown.
However, the agreement does not include an immediate extension of the ACA enhanced premium tax credits, which help millions of Americans afford health coverage. Instead, it merely guarantees a future vote in December—creating uncertainty for individuals and families who could face dramatic increases in insurance costs starting next year if Congress fails to act.
Without these enhanced credits, millions could lose coverage or be forced to choose between paying for health insurance and meeting other essential needs such as food, rent, or childcare. This would directly reduce access to mental health, substance use, and medical services—undermining recovery and well-being for countless people nationwide.
The Alliance calls on Congress to prioritize the protection of ACA premium supports as part of any final agreement. These tax credits are not partisan—they are lifelines that make health care affordable and accessible for working families, people with disabilities, and individuals in recovery.
We will continue to monitor developments closely and provide updates as the Senate and House move forward. The Alliance remains committed to advocating for a federal budget that protects access to needed services, supports recovery, and upholds the health and dignity of all people.
