Alliance Alert: The Alliance for Rights and Recovery is thrilled to see New York moving forward with $8 million to fund at least four additional Daniel’s Law crisis response pilot programs. This investment is another important step toward ensuring that people experiencing mental health and substance use crises receive compassionate, health-led support rather than a law enforcement response.
This progress reflects years of advocacy by people with lived experience, families, providers, and advocates through the Daniel’s Law Coalition. We thank Senator Samra Brouk and Assemblymember Harry Bronson, along with Senate and Assembly leadership, for once again championing this funding and recognizing the need to transform New York’s crisis response system.
These pilots bring us closer to our ultimate goal: a statewide system that can provide the right response to people where they are, no matter what corner of New York they call home. As the new programs are implemented, their experiences can also help identify best practices and inform the continued development of a comprehensive statewide approach.
Our Alliance Annual Conference, September 23–25 in Albany, will continue this conversation with workshops examining innovative crisis response programs as well as a deep dive into recent mental health and substance use policy and service changes across New York. We hope you’ll join us!
