Please help support our work in the months ahead to fight the most threatening proposals to expand coercion in our history!
Help us to lead the way and to organize and strategize to fight force and expansions in the use of involuntary inpatient and outpatient confinement and to see that people in need get the services and supports they want and need!
Forcing people into the same flawed services that have repeatedly failed them and labeling them as noncompliant when they want something better robs people of their dignity, respect, freedom and public acceptance.
We now know what works… our public officials need to have the will and the courage to reject public and political pressure to put people away.
Instead, they must provide proven solutions rather than traumatizing hospitalizations and failed discharges into services that have long waiting lists and staff that are constantly leaving due to scandalously low wages.
Governor Hochul has made a sincere billion dollar commitment to repair and expand housing in the community but, after decades of state policies that have starved our service systems, she cannot stop there.
She must take the next step and make history by creating a much more engaging, effective, well coordinated and accountable mental health system.
Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and their families are counting on her to reject the pressure to criminalize and coerce people with mental illnesses like me and my peers!
