NYAPRS Note: Have you been staying informed by the Managed Care Technical Assistance Center? They are your main source for information about the behavioral health transition into Medicaid and special Health and Recovery Plans in NY. An important webinar (below) is being held this afternoon on obtaining an NPI number, and is particularly important for people qualified and planning to qualify for being an HCBS provider. Additionally, the deadline for a second round of readiness assessments is tomorrow. If you are a behavioral health agency in NY and have not filled out this assessment, now is the time! Please submit an assessment; these are the driving force behind the future efforts of MCTAC to provide targeted assistance to providers as everyone prepares for this transition.
NPI (National Provider Identification) Number Webinar, April 29, 2015, 2-3pm
Attention: All HCBS providers
Agencies that will be providing HCBS services and that do not currently bill Medicaid are strongly encouraged to have a representative attend this training.
Please join MCTAC for our upcoming NPI (National Provider Identification) number webinar on April 29th from 2-3pm, presented by Boris Vilgorin of the NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research. This webinar will focus on assisting providers in applying for their NPI number in order to bill Managed Care Organizations.
This web-based training is particularly important for HCBS providers, although all providers are welcome to join. HCBS providers must have either an NPI or MMIS number in order to bill for HARP services. All HCBS providers are eligible for an NPI number, under the “other community behavioral health” category. Getting an NPI number is the first step in preparing to to bill managed care plans.
This webinar will guide agencies through the application process for an NPI number, as well as provide a general overview of its significance and utility. Please join Boris Vilgorin and the MCTAC team on April 29th from 2-3pm to learn more about applying for an NPI number, a key step in the preparation for the upcoming transition to Medicaid managed care.
Provider Readiness

Upcoming deadlines:
- For OMH and OASAS provider agencies: April 30, 2015
- The deadline for OCFS voluntary agencies has passed. If you have questions about this assessment, please emailCTAC.info@nyu.edu.
The most critical step for agencies to prepare for the transition to Medicaid managed care is to assess a number of strengths and identify areas that need increased capacity and attention to thrive in the new reimbursement system. MCTAC offers a readiness assessment tool for respective agency leadership and management team members to complete. The purpose of this assessment is to determine the degree to which your organization is prepared for critical changes across domains of Managed Care. MCTAC evaluates all completed survey responses and provides back to agencies aggregate readiness metrics, both on an organizational level and in comparison with other agencies across the state.
For OMH and OASAS provider agencies:
- Print out a hard copy of the assessment and fill it out together with your team.
- If you have any questions or want more guidance, review the short recorded webinar that outlined the basics of provider readiness and answered frequently asked questions here.
- Enter your responses into the online survey form, found here.
- Analyze and assess the results and how your agency compares to the larger New York State behavioral health provider community.
For OMH children’s services providers:
- In addition to the assessment, please fill the children’s services specific addendum (PDF of the tailored children’s services addendum)
- Input your responses into the online survey, to submit separately, here.
For OCFS voluntary agencies:
*Please note that the deadline for this assessment has passed. Please email CTAC.info@nyu.edu with any questions.
- Fill out the readiness assessment with a separate addendum for OCFS voluntary agencies (PDF of the OCFS readiness assessment)

- For additional information about provider readiness, download resources from our Managed Care Kickoff:
Please save a copy of your readiness assessment for your records.
In addition to helping your leadership team think through what’s needed ahead of the transition, submitting the readiness assessment is a great opportunity for your organization to make your voice heard on which areas of technical assistance are most needed. Your participation will help MCTAC better serve your organization’s needs as you navigate the changing healthcare system.
Please note: Readiness assessment responses are completely 100% confidential. Only aggregate statewide and regional data, not individual agency-level information, will be shared with state government officials to help to inform their work coordinating the transition to managed care.
