NYAPRS Note: Take a look at this very timely newsletter that is devoted to the subject of psychiatric advance directives and that features NYAPRS Conference presenter Jennifer Mathis of the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law and our own Colleen Sheehan.Psychiatric Advance Directives are a critical tool to help people, families and providers in crisis that are not well known or used and, when they are available, get inadequate attention.
The advent of electronic healthcare records provides an unprecedented opportunity for PADs to be a prominent part of every person’s record.
[Issue 8: September 2016]
Practicing Recovery: Promoting Recovery during Crisis
In this issue of Practicing Recovery, we look at how psychiatric advance directives (PADs) can create communication bridges between helping professionals and individuals experiencing what may be their most vulnerable moments.
A PAD is a legal document that allows people with mental health conditions to state their treatment preferences in advance of mental health crises. When PADs exist and practitioners are trained in their adoption and implementation, everyone involved benefits. We hope that this issue will accelerate the adoption of PADs within the behavioral health community.
