Established in 2005, the NYC Mental Health Film Festival (#MHFF) is the oldest and largest mental health film festival in the United States. It has screened more than 50 films, attracted over 5,000 audience members, and serves as a positive voice and advocacy effort promoting social justice and human rights for people with mental health concerns.
Community Access, the festival’s host and principal organizer, is proud to produce this event which has become a powerful catalyst for creating a dialogue about mental health. #MHFF annually showcases independent, short, and feature films and documentaries, and hosts panel discussions that foster a dialogue about mental health. Since its inception, mental health recipients have played a major role in organizing the festival: selecting films, volunteering at the event, assisting with promotions and community outreach, and in other advocacy roles.
Festival organizer Carla Rabinowitz: “The purpose of the NYC mental health film fest is to defeat stigma and create community thru film through the showing of great (not preachy) films that have a mental health twist, and that are followed by discussion with noted figures.
The day starts at 10:30 am with discussion with Chamique Holdsclaw, former WNBA star who lives with a mental health condition. The afternoon program begins at 1:30 and features a discussion with Tasha Smith of the hit series “Empire.” The festival ends at 4:30 pm
