Description
Individuals with behavioral health conditions are entitled to range of legal protections, including those codified in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008, the Olmstead Decision, the Rehabilitation Acts, the Fair Housing Act (FHA), and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). At the same time, many individuals in recovery are either unfamiliar with these laws or are unclear about the extent to which these laws apply to them and their own pursuit of goals and choices with regards to health, home, work, school, and community. Information about these laws and their applicability to a variety of situations prepares individuals with behavioral health conditions, peer-run organizations, recovery community organizations, service providers, advocates and others concerned with advancing access to recovery and recovery supports to educate themselves and their networks about important legal protections.
The Celebrating 25 Years: Recovery Perspectives on the ADA and other Landmark Legislation webinar will honor the rich history of the ADA, advance awareness of its relevance to individuals with behavioral health conditions, and provide information about other critical legal protections.
Webinar participants will be able to:
Describe key protections of the ADA and other anti-discrimination legislation;
Explain from case examples how legislative protections can be applied to a variety of situations;
Identify resources for accessing additional information and advocacy or legal assistance.
