Nomination Deadline Extended to May 12 for SAMHSA’s 2017 Voice Awards

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Voice Awards program honors people in recovery and their family members who are community champions to improve the lives of people with mental illnesses and addictions. The Voice Awards also recognizes television and film productions that educate the public about behavioral health and showcase that recovery is real and possible.

In 2017, the Voice Awards is putting the spotlight on individuals and entertainment productions that provide hope and support to past and present service members who have faced mental health and addiction challenges.

DEADLINE EXTENDED: Nominations within the following categories are now due by May 12, 2017.

TELEVISION AND FILM PRODUCTIONS

This category recognizes television and film productions that have featured dignified, respectful, and accurateportrayals ofpeople with mental illnesses and/or addictions.

Eligible productions should emphasize the positive journey of recovery from these conditions and must have aired in a public setting after April 15, 2016.

Special consideration will be given to television and film productions that portray personal stories of resilience and strength of America’s service members, veterans, and their families.

NOTE:Only productions that have been distributed in the United States are eligible.

CONSUMER, PEER, AND FAMILY LEADERS

This category recognizes individuals who have educated the public about mental health and/or addictions, specifically those who have:

  • Personally demonstrated that recovery is real and possible;
  • Led efforts to reduce the negative public attitudes and misperceptions associated with mental illnesses and addictions;
  • Made a positive impact on communities, workplaces, or schools; and
  • Promoted meaningful family involvement as an essential part of recovery.

Special consideration will be given to consumer/peer/family leaders* who are working to ensure that America’s military and veteran communities have access to the mental health and substance use treatment and services they deserve.

NOTE: Only individuals who live and work in the United States are eligible.

NOMINATIONS ARE NOW DUE BY

MAY 12

The 2017 Voice Awards ceremony will take place on August 16at UCLA’s Royce Hall.

Nominations are open to anyone. There is no limit to the number of nominations an individual can submit, and self-nominations are welcome.

*The Voice Awards program broadly defines “consumer/peer leader” as a person who has received or is receiving services for a mental health condition and/or addiction. It broadly defines “family leader” as a family member who, with his/her loved ones, has championed recovery and addressed mental health conditions and/or addictions in their community.
