Understanding the Science of Sleep and Sleep’s Impact on Individuals with Serious Mental Illness | The Intersection of Chronic Pain, Serious Mental Illness, and Trauma on Sleep…and What to Do About It
“Individual trauma results from an event, series of events, or set of circumstances experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or life-threatening with lasting adverse effects on the individual’s functioning and mental, physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being.”
– SAMHSA-HRSA Center for Integrated Health Solutions
Trauma can exacerbate mental illness, and be a cause of unhealthful sleep. And, people with chronic pain tend to have higher rates of trauma. Individuals experiencing chronic pain, serious mental illness, or trauma may be at risk for health challenges like heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes – all of which can be caused by sleep disorders and chronic short sleep (Healthy People 2020, 2018). This constellation of factors will be discussed on March 14 from 1pm to 2pm ET in Science of Sleep: The Intersection of Chronic Pain, Serious Mental Illness, and Trauma on Sleep…and What To Do About It.
Part two in a three part series being hosted by SAMHSA’s Program to Achieve Wellness during National Sleep Awareness Month, this webinar will help providers, families/caregivers, and individuals with lived experience identify some of the conditions that can cause pain and interfere with sleep, and how individuals who experienced trauma can adopt strategies for improving sleep to promote overall health and wellness.
Led by Cathy Cave, Co-Director of SAMHSA’s Program to Achieve Wellness, this webinar will feature special guest Matt Canuteson who will share his own experiences with overcoming sleep challenges while in recovery.
