SAMHSA Shuffles Leadership of Mental Health Center
By Dan Diamond Politico October 4, 2018
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is reassigning the longtime leader of its mental health center (e.g. Center for Mental Health Services), two individuals with knowledge of the move told POLITICO.
Paolo del Vecchio, who has led the agency’s mental health center since 2012 and is well-known among advocates, has been tapped to run its office of management, technology and operations. The current head of the operations office, Greg Goldstein, is leaving the agency.
It’s not yet clear who will replace del Vecchio as head of the mental health center. SAMHSA declined requests to comment.
Del Vecchio has helped steer the surgeon general’s mental health report and multiple HHS initiatives on mental health. He is one of the few government health officials who has disclosed that he is in recovery.
