Save the Date and join us in the beautiful Catskills this fall for the 36th Annual New York State Office of Mental Health Directors of Nursing Educational Conference being held at the Villa Roma in Callicoon, NY.
The conference will run from October 24-26, 2012, and provide numerous opportunities to earn continuing education credit. While the main audience for the conference is psychiatric mental health nurses, it covers a number of content areas relevant to any healthcare professional providing psychiatric and mental health care.
This year’s conference theme is health care policy to practice and the changing health care landscape. Sessions will focus on excellence in inpatient and community-based care in the context of healthcare reforms. Featured presenters include:
- Michael Hogan, PhD, is the New York State Commissioner of Mental Health and served as Chair of the President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health. Dr. Hogan will be presenting on suicide prevention and the role of state mental health authorities in providing leadership.
Dr. Hogan is a member of the Executive Committee of the
National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention, the public-private partnership advancing the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, as well as Co-chair of its Clinical Care and Intervention Task Force. The Action Alliance serves to catalyze planning, implementation and accountability for updating and advancing the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention to reduce the burden of suicide in America.
- Mark Ragins, MD, is nationally recognized as a leading psychiatrist in the mental health recovery movement. Dr. Ragins is passionate about recovery-oriented care and will discuss the importance of welcoming care environments that foster hope and promote recovery.
As the Mental Health America of Los Angeles (MHA) Village’s founding psychiatrist and medical director, Dr. Ragins has nurtured the Village’s recovery-focused philosophies, service strategies and culture to help adults and young adults with mental illness, including those who are or have been homeless, reach full lives. Dr. Ragins’ “15 minutes of fame” may have come from his prominence in the book The Soloist by Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez, which chronicles life events of musically gifted Nathaniel Ayers-challenged by the symptoms of schizophrenia-and the friendship that forms between the two men.
Other sessions are aimed at increasing knowledge of the care of individuals experiencing a first-break psychosis, the mental health needs of LGBT individuals, gang violence, suicide risk assessment, culturally competent care, optimal clozapine utilization, and the emerging role of psychiatric mental-health nurses under health care reform . . .
