Dear Friends,
Community Access can use your help.
Hurricane Sandy struck Lower Manhattan with an unprecedented punch. You have all seen the pictures of flooded tunnels. What is less obvious is absolute loss of basic services to this community—no phones, food, stores, lights, hot water, or refrigeration. Unfortunately, 40% of the 1,100 people we serve every day live below 38th Street and are facing extreme hardship. Most of these tenants live on less than $15 a day and depend on us for food and meals at the end of each month.
I’ve just returned from the Lower East Side where nine of our buildings are without power. We experienced severe flooding at two sites—109 Avenue D and Gouverneur Court—where kitchens and pantries that we use to provide meals have been destroyed.
Your help over the next few days will be much appreciated. While we would love to organize volunteer programs, the communication situation makes this impossible. Instead, we would welcome donations of basic items, such as bottled water, canned goods, peanut butter, tuna fish, granola bars, bread, fresh fruit, nuts, crackers, juice, and other items that don’t require refrigeration or a lot of preparation.
* We are accepting food donations at our East Village Access program site at 242 East 2nd Street (between Avenue C and B) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday between 10AM and 3PM.
* If you’re not able to donate food, please consider a tax deductible contribution online at www.communityaccess.org/donate <http://communityaccess.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=06f01110b2bebf715c1a23a0b&id=168fc31b9b&e=258f5eb134>
In my 33 years as director of Community Access, this is clearly our hour of greatest need. We usually depend on government to take up the slack—and I’ve received many assurances that our government partners are eager to help—however this support will not be available for weeks or months. We need help to feed everyone in need over the next few days.
I sincerely thank you for your assistance. Feel free to contact me directly at steve.coe at gmail.com, as our main servers have been shut
down by the storm.
All the best,
