On March 31, 2021, Governor Cuomo signed HALT (Humane Alternatives to Long Term Solitary Confinement) legislation into law, restricting the usage of this traumatizing and torturous practice, banning it entirely for people with disabilities, seniors, youth, and new and pregnant moms and requiring the provision of rehabilitative services. Come hear powerful stories and lived experiences of several very inspiring advocates who helped to win passage of landmark legislation that is bringing foundational change to New York’s criminal justice system

Stories from the HALT Campaign and Activists: Moving Forward in Criminal Justice Systemic Change
PART 2 1.50 CE hours

Following the recent passage of the landmark HALT Bill (Humane Alternatives to Long Term Solitary Confinement) that limits and in many instances bans the usage of solitary confinement in the state of New York, the leaders of the Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement are in the process of identifying necessary next steps in advancing fundamental systemic reforms and addressing structural racism throughout the criminal justice system.
This presentation will build on themes identified in the Part 1 May 11 presentation (see above), including some discussion on strategies to prepared for and address the critical challenges of re-entry in the community and the key role of peer support in that process.
