Toolkit for Modifying Evidence Based Practices to Increase Cultural Competence

This course is being offered free to NY State residents, practitioners and students in the mental health field. The on-line self-paced course provides training in the use of the Toolkit for Modifying Evidence-Based Practices to Increase Cultural Competence. The Toolkit provides a comprehensive step-by-step method for agencies, programs and practitioners to select and modify evidence-based practices to meet the needs of their clients across cultural groups.
No matter what their roles, mental health providers aim to provide effective, comprehensive services to consumers in a way that is culturally appropriate. While evidence-based practices (EBPs) have proven to be effective at helping mental health consumers, it is clear that most EBPs have neither been fully tested nor proven to be effective for all cultural groups. Drawing upon information from the Toolkit for Modifying Evidence-Based Practices to Increase Cultural Competence, this course systematically considers modifications to EBPs for cultural groups in order to increase the cultural competence of EBPs and to improve the outcomes of consumers regardless of their cultural group.
This course uses a combination of experiential exercises, instructive information, and detailed case examples to teach the Toolkit methodology. After completing this training, you will possess the skills needed to apply the Toolkit methodology within your own organization.
The Toolkit and this course were developed with funding from the NY State Office of Mental Health to the Center of Excellence in Culturally Competent Mental Health. The Center’s charge is to “identify, assess the outcome and disseminate best practices of demonstrated behaviors, attitudes, policies and structures” that work effectively across varied cultures and modalities of care. The Center strives to move the cultural competency field forward.
