Mental Health Empowerment Project, Inc. Awarded SAMHSA Grant
The Mental Health Empowerment Project Inc. (MHEP) has been awarded a SAMHSA Networking Grant to support the development of the “Creating a Trauma Informed Community Project.” The grant period begins October 2012 and extends through September 2015. This project is fortunate to feature nationally renowned experts in Trauma Informed Care, Darby Penney and Cathy Cave, in addition to partnerships with five of the most substantial “peer-run” programs in New York State.
Amy Colesante, Executive Director of MHEP stated that this project will educate people who use mental health services about trauma and trauma-informed practices, including trauma-informed peer support; assist existing peer-run programs to implement trauma-informed peer support in their ongoing work; and support the development of peer leadership in community-building approaches to advocate for the adoption of trauma-informed values and practices in State and local mental health systems and services.
