NYAPRS Note: The following provides details about BHbusiness: Mastering Essential Business Operations, learning networks funded by SAMHSA and administered by The State Associations of Addiction Services in collaboration with the National Council, NIATx, and AHP. Through participation you’ll expand the skills you need to thrive in a healthcare environment driven by changes in funding and regulations.
The BHbusiness networks will consist of up to 30 organizations that applied as an individual organization or as a part of a pre-existing network of organizations, including a provider association or coalition. Networks will participate in a range of educational activities, including in-person meetings, webinars, small group/individual consultation and online courses taught by expert faculty.

Focusing on five essential business operations – strategic business planning, third-party billing and compliance, third-party contract negotiations, eligibility and enrollment, and meaningful use of healthcare technology – the project will help behavioral health providers improve their capacity to serve vast new numbers of Americans seeking treatment for mental and substance use disorders. With the goal of ensuring that providers are well-equipped to provide effective and efficient behavioral health services, the effort affords providers the best opportunity to successfully meet the increasing system demands.
Strategic Business Planning:
The Strategic Business Planning Learning Network will teach participants how to develop a business plan that takes advantage of opportunities created by the Affordable Care Act. Participants will learn how to analyze their local healthcare market, define their value in the market, and identify potential market needs that they can address. Learn more.
Third-party Billing and Compliance:
Participants in the Third-party Billing and Compliance Learning Network will learn how to implement third-party billing systems that are compliant with regulatory and funder requirements. Participants will also study the areas where billing systems function poorly and learn improvement techniques to improve collection rates. Learn more.
Third-party Contract Negotiations:
The Third-party Contract Negotiations Learning Network will train participants on new reimbursement options such as: partnering with insurance networks, other community agencies, primary care, and employee assistance plans. Participants will develop the the skills to create an analysis of their local healthcare market, define their value in the market and identify potential gaps that they can address and capture. Eligibility and Enrollment:
The Eligibility and Enrollment Learning Network course is designed for providers who want to increase client access to health insurance coverage through Medicaid or premium-subsidized private health insurance (coverage affordability programs). It will cover eligibility criteria, application, and enrollment processes. Participants will develop a process or improve their current processes for ensuring that patients are enrolled in the health care coverage that works best for them and their family. Learn more.
Meaningful Use of Healthcare Technology (HIT):
The Meaningful Use of Healthcare Technology Learning Network will teach participants how to assess how HIT will impact their organization’s functions. Participants will learn the requirements for the CMSH EHR Meaningful Use Incentive Program and how to determine provider eligibility for it. They will also understand the business processes that would be affected by adoption of an EHR and assess their readiness for adoption of HIT. Learn more.
