The Roles of Peer Specialists: A Continuing Free Webinar Series on the Roles of Peer Specialists:
Helping the People You Serve to Connect to the Religious/Spiritual Congregations of Their Choice
The National Mental Health Consumers Self-Help Clearinghouse, in cooperation with the Temple University Collaborative on Community Inclusion of Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities, invites your participation in the fourth installment of its popular webinar series on the varied roles peer specialists can play in promoting greater participation in everyday community life of the individuals they serve.
On May 16, 2013 – from 2:00 – 3:30 PM, the webinar series turns its attention to the opportunities peer specialists have to assist those they serve to connect to the religious and/or spiritual congregations of their choice. The seminar will review the importance of religious/spiritual connection for many of those you serve, the controversies surrounding peer specialists engagement in these issues, and a series of recommendations for defining your role and developing effective strategies in this arena. Please join us.
Unlike our past discussions – which have focused on community participation initiatives of peer-operated programs, the challenges of community inclusion faced by peer specialists in rural areas, and the roles peers can play in helping the individuals they serve return to competitive employment – this webinar invites greater participation of webinar participants, asking each of you to share your experiences in helping people connect to the local religious congregations of their choice.
The webinar will begin with a presentation by Richard Baron, Director of Knowledge Translation for the Temple University Collaborative, on the Collaborative’s informal survey of peer specialists on the topic and the recommendations that emerged from their comments, and then turn to a broader discussion among the participants on the call: what have been your experiences with organized religious and/or spiritual organizations; how responsive do you feel religious and/or spiritual groups have been to the people you serve; what roles should/could you plan in promoting congregational connections; and what recommendations would you make to the field?
