NYAPRS Note: In anticipation of the huge healthcare and insurance changes ahead, health plans are merging. Late last year, Healthfirst announced plans to acquire Neighborhood Health providers to form one of the City’s and state’s largest health plans. Now MVP is merging with Hudson Health Plan. Look for both groups to seek to play a major role in the upcoming integration of behavioral health services within or with Medicaid health plans.
Insurer Merger
Crain’s Health Pulse May 13, 2013
MVP Health Care and Hudson Health Plan announced Friday that they plan to merge, prompted by the notion that bigger is better when it comes to selling products on the New York Health Benefit Exchange in January.
The two nonprofit health plans will have a combined 733,000 members. MVP Health Care operates in New York, Vermont and New Hampshire and has more than 613,000 members and a regional network of 19,000 providers. The Schenectady insurer is acquiring the much smaller Tarrytown-based Hudson Health, which serves about 120,000 members in the Hudson Valley through a regional network of 5,000 providers.
Hudson Health will continue to operate under that name. Financial terms of the merger were not disclosed.
