ACTION ALERT: Congress Puts Mental Health Recovery Programs, Protection and Advocacy at RiskCongress will soon make decisions that could slash funding for—and restrict access to–state mental health consumer networks, national mental health technical assistance centers and human and civil rights protections for people with serious mental health conditions. The Senate plans to cut funding to state mental health consumer networks 20 percent, and the House could cut even more. One Representative, who vowed to “reform wasteful spending” at SAMHSA, is targeting the Alternatives conference, state consumer networks and protection and advocacy organizations. Act now by signing a petition that tells Congress to safeguard and fully fund mental health recovery programs and the PAIMI (Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Mental Illness) program. These programs are vital to the recovery and rights of all Americans who experience serious mental health conditions. They have long enjoyed bipartisan support in Congress, but now are in jeopardy.
