NYAPRS Note: We are urging all enews readers and friends to contact legislative leaders RIGHT NOW to support the inclusion of crisis intervention teams in the final budget. The Crisis Intervention Teams initiative provides extensive mental health training to police first responders and improves collaboration between mental health services to curtail avoidable tragedies and incarcerations, saving lives and helping to keep our people out of the criminal justice system
This past Tuesday, legislative mental hygiene budget committee chairs Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and Senator David Carlucci Legislative joined our Tuesday news conference in support of CITs. This morning during the joint Assembly and Senate Mental Hygiene budget hearing, they identified an additional $19 million to add to what the Governor had identified in his mental hygiene budget. That money has to be divided among a number of interests on the mental hygiene table.
The budget process are on a very fast track: 3 way negotiations between Senate, Assembly and the Governor’s representatives are underway as we speak and we’re expecting a final agreement to be announced this coming Monday. We need your support to ensure CIT is in the final budget!
