NYAPRS Note: A conference ongoing this week brings together justice and behavioral health leaders from across the country to discuss program interventions for justice involved community members. All sessions are recorded and posted on the web link below, including learning centers from award grantees that are implementing collaborative programming. Second Chance Act and Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program Conferences Convene this Week


With funding support form the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Council of State Governments Justice Center (CSG Justice Center) will convene more than 800 criminal justice experts and professionals from May 13-16, 2014 for a pair of overlapping conferences designed to promote collaboration among federal grantees combatting issues of mental health and recidivism. The CSG Justice Center will provide daily morning and afternoon livestreams of the plenary sessions on the conferences webpage. Conference attendees will include representatives from organizations and agencies across the country that receive funding through one of two federally funded programs: the Second Chance Act (SCA) or the Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program (JMHCP). Officials from the U.S. Department of Justice and other federal agencies are expected to join in the weeklong events.

The week kicks off tomorrow with nearly 150 individuals representing JMHCP grantees from 22 states. The program is designed to facilitate collaboration across the justice and mental health systems and to ultimately improve access to effective treatment and bolster public safety. Attendees will receive two days of training and attend plenaries to help initiate their individual programs and run them efficiently and effectively. Overlapping with the final day of training for JMHCP grantees, Wednesday will be the start of the Second Chance Act Conference. Second Chance Act grantees will learn from experts and their peers about best practices for successful reentry back into the community upon release from prisons, jails, and juvenile justice facilities.

 

The conferences will feature keynote addresses by a number of dignitaries, including Director Denise O’Donnell from the U.S Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance, Assistant U.S. Attorney General Karol Mason, Superintendent Tom Stickrath from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Acting Director Michael Botticelli from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, and others.
