NYAPRS Overview
The New York Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services (NYAPRS), a nationally acclaimed peer-led behavioral health systems integration change agent based in Albany, NY, is dedicated to promoting the recovery, rehabilitation, and rights of people with psychiatric disabilities or diagnoses. NYAPRS is currently seeking a Peer Bridger for its Peer Services division.
Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Director of Peer Services, the Peer Bridger provides peer support services to people transitioning from psychiatric or substance abuse facilities into their own communities through individual and group peer support meetings. This is a full-time position that requires extensive travel largely within the Long Island counties of Nassau and Suffolk.
Major Responsibilities/Activities:
- Engages referred individuals to form trust-based relationships that fosters hope for positive change and personal empowerment;
- Maintains personal wellness;
- Travels to numerous locations either to engage members or to support the recovery of individuals we work with;
- Continues with individuals after discharge to identify and engage with a range of community-based supports;
- Completes detailed written record of activities;
- Reports to and meets with NYAPRS supervisor on a regular basis;
- Attends trainings as required and assigned by supervisor; and
- Performs other duties as required and assigned.
Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the New York State mental health and substance use systems;
- Demonstrated knowledge of advocacy, self-help and empowerment programs for recipients of mental health and substance use services;
- Ability to convey a message of hope and recovery for people with psychiatric disabilities;
- Ability to complete basic documentation requirements regarding work activities;
- Flexible schedule occasionally including evenings and week-ends;
- Must have own vehicle, clean driving record, and adequate automobile insurance coverage;
- Must have internet/email access;
- Candidate must reside in Long Island, preferably in Nassau or Suffolk county;
- Lived experience with the mental health system preferred.
