NYAPRS Note: Visit the new website — http://combatheroin.ny.gov/ — to learn more about prevention and how to get help for yourself, a loved one, or someone in a program. A surge in heroin use across NYS has providers, policy and law makers struggling to respond in an efficient and effective manner. We will likely see more attention paid to the issue in this year’s legislative session, but it may be too soon to know whether funding and programmatic efforts have reached targets to curb the spread of heroin’s use. The drug itself, while requiring its own systemic effort, is often predicated in use by prescription opiates. If not addressed by health industry professionals, the growing use of these pharmaceuticals will continue to contribute to heroin use across NYS and the nation.
State Introduces Website to Combat Growing Heroin Use
From Crain’s Health Pulse on 9/23: The state’s new heroin laws require the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services to implement a public-awareness campaign in partnership with the Department of Health. The state announced a new website targeted at parents, adults and young people. The website includes information about warning signs of heroin and opioid abuse and misuse, access to OASAS treatment providers, and talking points for parents and providers.
