NYAPRS Note: Our friends at the New York Association of Independent Living have asked us to encourage Governor Cuomo to sign A.1276 and S.2967A which would provide homeowners with a tax credit to assist with the purchase of a visitable home or go toward the cost of making an existing home more accessible. This is a fantastic opportunity to advocate for folks, and it only takes a minute. Please click the link below. Thanks.
Take action today and urge Governor Cuomo to sign the Visitability Tax Credit Bill into law!
A.1276 (Lavine) and S.2967A (DeFrancisco) passed both the Senate and the Assembly this session, and now it’s been delivered to the Governor’s office. Act today to urge Governor Cuomo to sign this important bill into law. This bill would provide homeowners with a tax credit of up to $2,750 to renovate their home to make it more universally visitable, or to go toward the cost of developing a universally visitable home. This incentive would effectively increase the stock of visitable homes in New York State.
Background: Most existing housing stock is not designed to accommodate people with disabilities, including disabilities as one ages. Housing built with basic accessibility features – known as “visitability” – would meet the needs of people throughout the lifespan and allow homes to be visitable by friends and family members with disabilities. Renovation of new homes can be quite costly, putting people at risk of unwanted institutionalization. A1276 (Lavine) and S2967A (DeFrancisco) would provide homeowners with a tax credit to assist with the purchase of a visitable home or to go toward the cost of retrofitting a home to make it more accessible.
