NYAPRS Note: SAMSHA is offering a free webinar on Monday, December 7th entitled “Coordinated Entry: Perspectives from the Field.” Coordinated Entry provides streamlined access to the homeless services system thereby allowing households facing housing loss to quickly access the services they need and for which they are eligible without having to call multiple social service programs. This webinar will look specifically at the roles of behavioral health organizations in the Coordinated Entry process. More information, including a registration link, is below.

Coordinated Entry: Perspectives from the Field

SAMHSA’s Homeless and Housing Resource Network is pleased to announce the upcoming webinar, Coordinated Entry: Perspectives from the Field. This webinar will provide a concise overview of coordinated entry and the qualities of an effective coordinated entry system. Community organizations, including SAMHSA grantees, will share their successes, challenges, and promising strategies related to planning and implementing coordinated entry initiatives. Presenters will highlight the roles of mental health and behavioral health organizations, the process, and the benefits of coordinated entry for their clients. Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to

  • understand different roles that agencies play in coordinated entry;
  • understand the roles of coordinated entry in behavioral health and in the homelessness assistance system;
  • become acquainted with various models of coordinated entry
  • recognize qualities of effective coordinated entry systems;
  • understand key components of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD’s) coordinated entry policy brief, including prioritization of persons who are most vulnerable; and
  • understand how coordinated entry can be valuable in connecting clients in their SAMHSA-funded programs with housing resources.

Webinar Presenters

Lindsay Knotts, M.S.W.

Ms. Knotts serves as Policy Advisor for the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), where she helps to coordinate federal policy efforts for the Council and provides broad policy guidance to USICH leadership. In that role, Ms. Knotts manages and oversees quarterly convenings of the 19 Council agencies to advance the goals and objectives of Opening Doors and supports the Council’s work to end chronic homelessness and to connect individuals experiencing homelessness to SSI/SSDI benefits.

Norm Suchar, M.M.

Mr. Suchar is Director of the Office of Special Needs Assistance Programs at HUD. Prior to coming to HUD in 2014, Mr. Suchar worked for 12 years at the National Alliance to End Homelessness, where he helped communities implement system-wide strategies to prevent and end homelessness, including coordinated entry, housing first, permanent supportive housing, rapid re-housing, prioritization, and outcome measures.

Kelly King Horne, M.A.

Ms. Horne has served as Executive Director of Homeward in Richmond, Virginia since 2007. She also serves on the Governor’s Coordinating Council for Homelessness and the Affordability Workgroup of the Virginia Housing Commission, as well as the City of Richmond’s Community Criminal Justice Board. Her past work has included collaborative roles with Homeward and the United Way of Greater Richmond and Petersburg, Habitat for Humanity International, and the Peace Corps.

Christy Respress, M.S.W.

Ms. Respress is Executive Director of Pathways to Housing DC. She has worked with Pathways to Housing for 14 years in a range of positions from direct service to management. Pathways to Housing DC serves over 2,000 individuals who are homeless or at risk for homelessness each year and has ended homelessness for over 600 individuals using the Housing First model since opening its doors in 2004. In addition to extensive knowledge of Housing First, Ms. Respress also has experience administering a SAMHSA Services in Supported Housing Grant focused on integrating primary care into behavioral health services.
