NYAPRS Note: It is widely expected that Governor Cuomo will increase the minimum wage to $15/hour in NYS, which may put nonprofits in a difficult spot in terms of trying to retain a quality workforce.
We have discussed this concern with the Cuomo administration, and look forward to working with our advocacy partners to ensure that nonprofits are able to keep pace. The issue may in fact be one of our policy agenda items on our February 23, 2016 Legislative Day. Stay tuned.

Groups Back $15 Minimum Wage for NY Nonprofit Staffs

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Three advocacy groups are calling for a $15 statewide minimum wage that would apply to New York’s nonprofits as well as additional funding in government contracts to cover it.
The Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, the Fiscal Policy Institute and the Human Services Council say they’re leading a campaign to make $15 the minimum for all low-wage workers.
New York’s minimum for most workers is set to increase from $8.75 to $9 an hour at the end of the year.
The groups say roughly 2,500 nonprofits in New York rely on state contracts to provide essential services to people, and additional contract funding would be needed to prevent an unfunded mandate that would cut services.
