Sterling Community Center Peer Specialist Training
Course Overview:
Sterling Community Center’s Peer Specialist Training is a 70 hour training designed to impart knowledge regarding the recovery process and to teach peer support, engagement and reflective listening skills. Additionally, the course will cover the psychosocial dimensions of recovery and an overview of the mental health system where many participants receive services.
Following the classroom portion of the training, students participate in hands-on internship placements at local human services programs/organizations, giving them the opportunity to practice and improve the skills learned in class. Internships are typically six to ten hours per week for a 12 week period. Program staff will also provide support and assistance for students who wish to pursue their New York State Peer Specialist Certification, as well as helping in the process of finding and securing jobs.
Classes are held at the Sterling Community Center in White Plains, NY and will begin on Monday, July 11.
Eligibility and Contact Information:
In order to participate in the training, applicants must:
- Be 18 years or older
- Have history of being diagnosed with a mental health condition
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent (i.e. GED)
