NYAPRS Note: The film “Spotlight” received the Oscar for Best Film last year for its portrayal of the Boston Globe’s hard hitting coverage of coverage of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. More recently, the Spotlight team put a focus on mental health policy and, in response, Boston based advocates including the National Coalition for Mental Health Recovery’s Oryx Cohen arranged for a member of the Spotlight team to participate on a panel yesterday to respond to the landmark new film in which Oryx appears called “Healing Voices.”This fall’s NYAPRS Annual Conference will feature the screening of this internationally acclaimed “social action documentary” that will include discussion that will be facilitated by Oryx around how each of us view the range of conditions and circumstances that are associated with a ‘mental illness.’ This groundbreaking film has been shown in over 130 communities to date and will be shown this September 14th at NYAPRS during SAMHSA’s Wellness Week and on World Hearing Voices Day.
