This Thursday from the Studios at Paramount in the historic Paramount Theater in Los Angeles, the United States Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, will unveil his office’s long-awaited, groundbreaking report addressing the country’s leading public health crisis, at Facing Addiction in America – A National Summit.
The Surgeon General’s report is Facing Addiction in America: The Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health. During the summit, Dr. Murthy will provide a full account of the current knowledge base surrounding the neurobiology of addiction, prevention, treatment, recovery and the urgent need to integrate substance use disorder services into the health system.

The summit will unite the media, stakeholders in the addiction field, policy makers and public figures as the national conversation around addiction is spotlighted. Joining Dr. Murthy will be Dr. George Koob, Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism; Dr. Nora Volkow, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and Kana Enomoto, Administrator of Substance Abuse Mental Health Services.
In addition, many leading experts in neurobiology, prevention, treatment and recovery, will come together to lend their voices to Facing Addiction in America – A National Summit.
“Addressing the addiction crisis in America will require seeing addiction as a chronic illness – not as a moral failing,” said Murthy. “Addiction has been a challenge for a long time, but we finally have the opportunity and the tools to address it. By bringing together researchers, treatment providers, policy makers and key influencers, this summit will help our country see that a united front is necessary to address a public health challenge of this magnitude.”
