Webinar Description
A CIT program is a model for community policing that brings together law enforcement, mental health providers, hospital emergency departments, and individuals with mental illness
and their families to improve responses to people in crisis. CIT programs enhance communication, identify mental health resources for assisting people in crisis, and ensure that officers get the training and support that they need.1 However, much
of the training and promotion of CIT has remained focused on law enforcement with little exploration of the interface between law enforcement and the various components of the provider community.
In this webinar, one of three planned to address lesser explored corners of the criminal justice and behavioral health world, we will look at how CIT programs, officers, and
behavioral health providers can work together to increase best outcomes for the person experiencing a crisis. Participants will be able to:
Define the primary goals and responsibilities of CIT officers serving the community.
Describe how the goals of CIT officers and the goals of community mental health services relate to access to supportive and welcoming services.
Identify methods for improving the working relationship between CIT and providers to benefit the individuals served.
Host: Melody Riefer, M.S.W.
Presenters:
Tania Rosas Woods, LCSW, is the law enforcement liaison for the Oklahoma
