At the Nexus of Recovery, Psychiatry and Managed Care
When one looks at many of the key advances in transforming beliefs, practices and policies that advance the concepts of recovery, resilience, dignity, wellness and person directed services over the last 40 years, all roads lead to the life and pioneering work of Dr. Patricia Deegan.
Since the 1990’s, Pat has served as one of recovery movement’s most visionary, inspirational, articulate and practical guides and leaders. She has been singularly focused on the development of approaches and tools that have taken us from asking “what’s the matter with you’ to ‘what matters to you.”
- Her work has taken her from being a lone voice in advancing a Conspiracy of Hope to inspiring the creation of Communities of Hope.
- She was among the first to spur the creation of State Hospital Cemetery Restoration Projects that recapture the humanity and dignity of forgotten longtime residents of depersonalizing institutions during an especially bleak period in our history
- She creating ‘Hearing Voices’ curriculum and recordings to help advance understanding and empathy by practitioners and police alike
- Pat has popularized the concepts of Personal Medicine, actions rather than medications people can take to advance their own wellness and
- She developed CommonGround Software that supports shared-decision that brings the voice of the individual to the center of the care team.
This first-ever presentation of its kind will give Pat the unique opportunity to share her most current thoughts and projects with us and, in a discussion with her two highly recognized co-presenters, afford us a live, interactive look at how her work has fundamentally inspired and shaped both the practices of managed care and psychiatry.
Joining Pat will be
- James Gavin, former CEO of Community Care Behavioral Health. Jim brings 40 years of experience in behavioral health care from direct service delivery, senior management and consultant services, and is the groundbreaking managed care executive who brought Pat Deegan, Common Ground and the creation of a Recovery Institute for network providers to Pennsylvania.
