NYAPRS Note: In the wake of a mounting number of fatalities of people in emotional distress at the hands of police, many have questioned whether police officers can and should be first responders in those circumstances. This Wednesday at noon, CCSI will host a webinar entitled “Should Police Respond to Mental Health Emergencies” that will be led by Don Kamin, the director of the Institute for Police, Mental Health and Community Collaboration and lead consultant for the NYS Office of Mental Health’s state-wide Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program. Dr. Kamin will address the importance of system transformation to minimize the times that police are the first responders to individuals in emotional distress.
