The Daniel’s Law and Treatment Not Jail Coalitions will be holding their first advocacy day of the year next Wednesday, January 17th! They will host a JOINT RALLY at the Million Dollar Staircase as well as meet with legislators to push for the passage of both bills!
See below for more information, including how to RSVP for Wednesday’s event.
Hello everyone!
I am delighted to share some exciting news about our upcoming advocacy day next week: TNJ will be joining forces with the Daniel’s Law coalition to hold a JOINT RALLY on 1/17 at the Million Dollar Staircase!
As many TNJ coalition members know, Daniel’s Law is an amazing campaign that seeks to develop a statewide non-police crisis response system to respond to mental health emergencies. This campaign was inspired by Daniel Prude, who was senselessly killed by Rochester police in 2020 while he was experiencing a mental health crisis. Under the Daniel’s Law model, instead of armed police arriving to confront someone in distress, a trained team of peers and EMTs would be dispatched to provide immediate help, healing and connections to longer-term treatment.
Daniel’s Law and TNJ share the same goal: for too long, we have funneled those with mental health and substance use issues into our carceral, criminal legal system. On the front end, we must develop a crisis response system that insulates those experiencing mental health and substance use crises from the escalation and violence of police entanglement. For those who do end up arrested, we must create a post-arrest diversion system to allow these individuals to safely exit the abyss of our criminal legal system and return to their communities with the treatment and services and support that they needed all along.
Please join us for this special joint rally next week! If you haven’t already RSVPed, you can sign up here: www.tinyurl.com/AdvocacyDayJan2024!
See you all next Wednesday!
