Reimagine Public Safety Pledge Workshop: Transforming the Response to Crisis Calls for Service
Tomorrow, May 29th, at 3:00pm EST, John Jay College’s Future of Public Safety Initiative will host the third in a series of six online workshops designed to support communities that have signed onto the Reimagine Public Safety Pledge. This workshop will focus on crisis response services.
Millions of calls are made to 911 each year. And while this system serves a unique, important purpose, its overuse has resulted in the deployment of law enforcement to respond to incidents (such as mental health crises) sometimes outside the scope of their training/expertise.
Tomorrow’s webinar, Transforming the Response to Crisis Calls for Service, will highlight alternative models of crisis response and share resources to prepare communities to fund alternative methods to calls for mental health, substance use, and trauma related emergencies. The panel will feature leaders around the country who will offer guidance on creating and sustaining these alternatives, including:
- Mayor Cassie Franklin (Everett, WA)
- Tahir Duckett (Executive Director, Center for Innovations in Community Safety)
- Steve Miccio (Chief Executive Officer, People USA)
- Joshua Reeves (Alternative First Response Consultant)

About the Reimagine Public Safety Pledge
Launched by John Jay College in April 2023, in partnership with Cities United and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, with support from the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, the Reimagine Public Safety Pledge calls on mayors and local officials to invest in public safety strategies and programs that engage community partners to effectively address violence and crime in order to heal communities. Mayors who have already signed the Pledge represent rural, urban, and suburban communities from all parts of the country including West Virginia, Texas, New York, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, and others.
It is not too late to sign the Pledge, and we invite our partners in communities across the country to join us. Additional details about the pledge can be found here and you can reach out to Rebecca Atkinson, Director of Programs and Partnerships for the Future of Public Safety Initiative at ratkinson@jjay.cuny.edu with any questions about the pledge.
Everyone can support these efforts to reduce violence and create safe and healthy communities. Please join us in the important work of healing communities.
