Alliance Alert: The Alliance has been working with a group of national mental health peers, advocates, and other allies to call for protections in funding for mental health services through Medicaid. As Congress considers budget proposals which could significantly cut funding for Medicaid or limit the number of people eligible to enroll, we must make clear to our representatives that this essential service program must not be cut! The Alliance and our allies have created the following action alert to help you all send emails and call your congressional representatives demanding they protect Medicaid in any budget decisions this year. Use the link below to send messages and tell congress members why protecting Medicaid is so important to you, your organization, and the nation!

Protect Medicaid: Take Action Now!
The national mental health recovery movement has long been rooted in the principles of disability rights, social justice, and recovery for all, working to ensure that people with mental health, substance use, and trauma-related challenges have access to the services, support, and dignity they want and deserve. Today, that hard-won progress is in serious jeopardy!
Last month’s House budget resolution proposes deep cuts to Medicaid, putting millions of Americans at risk—especially those who rely on Medicaid for mental health, peer support, recovery services, and those that address health related social needs, like transportation, housing, and nutrition. Congress is poised to pass a budget that may include severe cuts to essential Medicaid and Medicare services or reduce the number of people eligible for coverage. Our national coalition of peers, family members, providers, mental health advocates, and other allies is calling on Congress to reject any cuts that will jeopardize the health and lives of Medicaid beneficiaries across our nation.
Medicaid is a lifeline for 80 million Americans, covering critical services such as:
- Peer support programs that promote recovery and reduce hospitalizations
- Crisis services, including mobile response teams and stabilization centers
- Community-based rehabilitative services
- Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs) that provide a package of comprehensive services
- Housing supports that help people remain and thrive in their communities
- Services addressing health-related social needs, such as nutritional assistance, employment support, and transportation
- Employment programs, including Medicaid Buy-In, which has been proven to save money while helping people achieve stability
We cannot let decades of advocacy be undone! The mental health recovery movement stands with the disability rights and social justice movements—along with other allies— to ensure that Medicaid remains strong, fully funded, and accessible to all who need it.
Take Action Today!
We have created the following alert to ease the process for you to quickly take multiple actions today.
- Send a Letter: Use our pre-written letter to contact your members of Congress and urge them to oppose Medicaid cuts. You can also customize your message to share why protecting Medicaid is important to you.
- Make a Call: Call your representatives to tell them to defend Medicaid and protect mental health services. We have included a script for reference.
- Spread the Word: Invite your friends, family, and colleagues to join the movement and take action. Every voice matters!
This is a critical moment for the mental health, disability rights, and social justice movements. Together, we must mobilize, educate, and push back against these unacceptable proposals. We are working to organize and expand grassroots advocacy efforts to call on Congress to uphold their duty to protect one of our nation’s most essential healthcare programs.
