Here’re some chilling facts from a new study that was published last week in the Annals of Internal Medicine by Drs. Adam Gaffney, Steffie Woolhandler and David Himmelstein of Physicians for a National Health Program last week, projecting how many Americans would die from Medicaid cuts. Their findings were dire! Under the bill passed by the House of Representatives in May, 7.6 million people would lose health insurance and 16,642 would die each and every year—estimates that they consider to be conservative.
Their study analyzed the impacts of the recently passed House bill, but we face the very real prospect of the Senate bill being even worse! These cuts, whatever their severity, are extremely unpopular with Americans across the political spectrum. It is crucial that we urge our elected officials to reject Medicaid cuts and to preserve this lifeline for their most vulnerable constituents.
Medicaid cuts are a matter of life and death, and Congress is feeling immense pressure to preserve the program. Please join us in adding to that pressure by speaking out against this dangerous legislation.
