Alliance Alert: The Alliance strongly supports the immediate signing of the Jail and Prison Oversight Omnibus Bill, a long overdue reform that will bring real accountability and transparency to New York’s correctional system. For years, our organization and partners across the state have documented the profound harm caused by unchecked violence, abuse, and neglect in jails and prisons. Strengthening oversight is not only a matter of justice but of basic human rights.
The tragic deaths of people like Robert Brooks and Messiah Nantwi, along with the ongoing crisis at Rikers and facilities statewide, underscore exactly why independent oversight must be reformed without delay. This bill is a meaningful step toward ensuring humane treatment, preventing abuse, and protecting the lives of incarcerated New Yorkers.
We urge Governor Hochul to sign this bill now and demonstrate the state’s commitment to safety, accountability, and dignity for all. The Alliance stands with directly impacted people, families, and advocates in pushing this critical reform across the finish line.
We are calling on our community to push the Governor to sign the Omnibus bill without delay.

Good afternoon
Jails and prisons across New York are in crisis. Gov. Hochul has until the end of 2025 to sign the Jail and Prison Oversight Omnibus bill into law. With 38 days left in the year, we need Gov. Hochul to sign the bill now. Lives are at stake and there’s no time to waste.
Take Action Here to Contact Gov. Hochul!
The brutal killings of Robert Brooks and Messiah Nantwi at Marcy and Mid-State prisons underscore the violence and abuse incarcerated people face in New York State’s prison system. In NYC, local jails are no different. Thirteen people have died at Rikers jails this year, and the rates of violence continue to rise in NYC jails.
Over the last two years, we’ve organized across the state to overhaul the State Commission of Correction and increase oversight of jails and prisons. Through rally’s, press conferences, lobby days, attending SCOC monthly meetings, legislative meetings, phone calls, and more we’ve gotten so close to overhauling this failing independent watchdog.
Once you take this online action, we ask that you share it with at least three people in your life and ask them to join us in taking action.
