Alliance Alert: Our community was shocked and heartbroken to learn about the loss of one of our kindest and most devoted members, Sean Brennan. Sean tirelessly gave so freely and fully from his big heart: this gentle warrior fought tirelessly for human rights, the arts, peer support, health, healing and trauma and mental health recovery…and for us.
We join our peers across the City, state and nation who mourn today and encourage you to honor and advance the sweetest fruit of Sean’s labor, the Brain Food Garden Project by purchasing a copy of his recently published book “The Compassionate Path: Navigating Mental Health Peer Advocacy and Nonprofit Development” at https://www.amazon.com/Compassionate-Path-Navigating-Nonprofit-Development/dp/B0FK43J7JY. The following tribute was released by Sean’s friends at Baltic Street Wellness Solutions.
In Loving Memory of Sean Brennan
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear colleague and friend, Sean Brennan, CEO of Brain Food Garden.
Sean was more than a leader — he was a visionary, a mentor, and a true champion for community wellness and dignity.
Through his tireless work, Sean transformed ideas into action, creating spaces where people could heal, grow, and connect. His passion for equity and nourishment extended far beyond food — it was about feeding the mind, body, and spirit of every person he encountered.
Sean’s warmth, humor, and unwavering belief in the power of community touched everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him. He led with compassion and purpose, inspiring those around him to dream bigger and care deeper.
Though Sean is no longer with us, his legacy continues to flourish in the programs he built, the lives he uplifted, and the countless seeds of kindness he planted along the way.
A memorial service is being held today at the Isaac Brown Community & Healing Arts Center, a place that beautifully reflects Sean’s values of creativity, restoration, and collective care.
As we remember Sean, may we honor his life by continuing the work he so passionately believed in by building community through love, empathy, and shared purpose.
In that spirit, we invite our readers to purchase a copy of Sean’s recently published book, The Compassionate Path: Navigating Mental Health Peer Advocacy and Nonprofit Development Paperback: 100% of profits go directly to the Brain Food Garden Project he created and loved so deeply.
Sean Brennan
Sean Brennan was the founder and executive director of the Brain Food Garden Project (BFGP). As a social entrepreneur, Sean embraced the rapidly growing field of therapeutic medical research and practices known as the “food as medicine” movement. He launched BFGP to raise awareness about the holistic benefits of food on psychological and physical health.
Prior to starting BFGP, Sean founded MSB Creative Restaurant Consulting and managed operations for several successful restaurant and hotel brands in New York City. A fourth-generation restaurateur, Sean began his career as a host in his family’s restaurant at the tender age of three. He has performed virtually every role in a restaurant imaginable, proudly continuing his family’s tradition of serving amazing food and providing gracious service.
Sean’s life changed in 2010 when he was diagnosed with clinical depression and later rediagnosed with bipolar disorder. Unable to continue in his profession, he embarked on a path of healing that led him to create BFGP. In 2016, Sean graduated from The Howie T. Harp Advocacy Center (HTH) and became a mental health peer advocate. He has also studied urban farming and food justice at Farm School NYC.
He was featured on Spectrum News NY1 as “Person of the Week,” received a Community Partnership Award for BFGP by Baltic Street Wellness Solutions, and was nominated for the first-ever New York City mayor’s award for “Leading the Charge” at the 2024 Peer Support Workers breakfast.
