The NYAPRS Cultural Competence Committee is very pleased to host the following webinar next Tuesday

Stories from the HALT Campaign and Activists: A Call to Action!   PART  2   1.50 CE hours
May 25th from 1-2:30 pm EST
Following the recent passage of the landmark HALT Bill (Humane Alternatives to Long Term Solitary Confinement) that limits and in many instances bans the usage of solitary confinement in the state of New York, the leaders of the Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement are in the process of identifying  necessary next steps in advancing fundamental systemic reforms and addressing structural racism throughout the criminal justice system.

This presentation will build on themes identified in the Part 1 May 11 presentation including some discussion on strategies to prepared for and address the critical challenges of re-entry in the community and the key role of peer support in that process. The panel will also issue a strong Call to Action! to provide all out grassroots community and organizational support against the resistance to the implementation of the HALT Law and follow up criminal justice efforts.

Participants attending this webinar:

  • Will learn how the HALT Campaign activists navigated the passage of this critically important legislation.

  • Review how the social determinants of health intersects with the criminal justice system and the need for continued change and sustained peer support, and discuss the impact of health disparities on the wellness and recovery needs of people who have experienced incarceration particularly within BIPOC communities.

  • Will hear the recovery stories of people who have been incarcerated and learn how they engage in personal self-care, achieve goals that support their sustained wellbeing.
