Alert: Urge Your NYS Legislator to Support Real Parole Reform; Clean Slate Legislation Due to Pass

June 9, 2021 by The Alliance for Rights and Recovery

NYAPRS Note: Earlier this year mental health advocates joined criminal justice reform advocates to win passage of the landmark Humane Alternatives To Long-Term (HALT) Solitary Confinement Act. Our groups are going to the next step and working to see Elder Parole and Fair and Timely Parole bills enacted into law in the remaining days of session. Please join us and Click here to tell legislators that we demand parole justice now. Thank you!  Harvey Rosenthal and the NYAPRS Cultural Competence Committees
At the same time, state lawmakers in New York are poised to approve two controversial criminal justice measures tomorrow after members of the Senate and the Assembly reached an agreement on the legislation overnight. The two bills — called Clean Slate and Less is More — would, respectively, allow people who’ve served their full sentence to have records sealed in most cases, and reduce the likelihood that technical parole violations will land them back in prison. When I was in prison, I was shocked by the number of incarcerated older women.
Click here to tell legislators that we demand parole justice now.
We support Elder Parole (S.15A5/A.3475A5A) and Fair & Timely Parole (S1415/A4231) which would reform New York’s broken parole system and create meaningful opportunities for rehabilitation and release.
Click here to contact your representative and urge them to pass Elder Parole and Fair & Timely Parole.
