Mary Ellen Copeland, nationally acclaimed author, educator, mental health advocate and creator of the Wellness Recovery Action Plan innovation(WRAP) will be interviewing Denis and Lee Horton, brothers who spent 27 years in prison, convicted of a crime they did not commit. When Lee and Denis were going into prison, they asked their mother and grandmother, “What do we do now?”” and they replied “make the best of it”. So Denis and Lee got trained in prison as Certified Peer Support Specialists and later as WRAP facilitators. They spent their days, and often their nights, supporting other prisoners as they tried to cope with the extreme circumstances of prison life, and leading very popular WRAP groups. Their work was so successful and made such a big difference for the prisoners, that, now that their sentences have been commutated and they are back in the community, they are working to get Peer Support Specialist and WRAP training integrated into the criminal justice system across the country.
